Spielman 9/4/04

On Saturday, after the Ohio State "skull session" pep rally, I walked around the stadium just taking in the great atmosphere of college football at the Horseshoe. Look who I found, signing autographs while doing a radio broadcast.

None other than Chris Spielman, former All-Pro linebacker with the Detroit Lions, All-American with Ohio State, and All-American at Massillon Washington High here in Northeast Ohio. Talk about some great roots!

Spielman was never the fastest, tallest, or biggest guy on the field. Just the smartest, fiercest, most passionate defender most of us have ever seen. Did you know he was the first (and maybe only) high school football player to be on the cover of a Wheaties cereal box?

I used to be more of an autograph hound, but I had nothing for him to sign (except a Nationwide Bank towel???) and nothing to write with. Regardless, it was nice to see Spielman sign dozens of autographs for all the fans who walked by. He didn't turn anyone away.
